Joe Turner's UK Clinic: Insights for British Western Riders
Teaching Horsemanship not Forcemanship
This summer, Joe Turner, a Montana-based horse trainer, held his first clinic in the UK. The Boston, Lincolnshire event offered British western riding enthusiasts a chance to learn from an experienced American trainer with a unique philosophy.
Listening to your horse and learning their non-verbal language is the best way to 'earn' their partnership and the respect that we and our horses both wish to obtain
Who is Joe Turner?
Joe Turner, self-described as "the Rocky Mountain Horseman," brings a diverse background to his horsemanship. Based in South West Montana, USA, Turner is not just a horse trainer but also a professional skier. His approach to horsemanship developed later in his youth, influenced by various horsemen but ultimately shaped by his experiences with horses.
Turner's philosophy centres on creating "Willing Partnerships through Desired Leadership" by "Teaching Horsemanship not Forcemanship." He emphasises gentle techniques rooted in horse psychology and herd behaviours, focusing on non-verbal communication and body language.
"Listening to your horse and learning their non-verbal language is the best way to 'earn' their partnership and the respect that we and our horses both wish to obtain," Turner explains.
His experience is extensive and varied:
- Former head trainer at one of the largest Rocky Mountain Horse ranches in the USA
- Worked with numerous breeds, from Arabians and Thoroughbreds to draft horses and mules
- Crowned International Colt Starting Champion in European competition in 2013
- Specialises in starting young horses, re-educating troubled horses, and working with stallions
The GED Clinic in Lincolnshire
Turner's recent UK clinic focused on GED (Gait, Equitation, and Disposition). Eleven to twelve horses of varying skill levels participated, with some working towards certification.
Throughout the clinic, Turner emphasised his core belief: "Kindness is always the best tool you can have!"
aiming to develop partnerships based on natural horse dynamics rather than human-centric domination
Evidence-Based Approach
One notable aspect of Turner's teaching is his emphasis on evidence-based horsemanship. He incorporates insights from equine anatomy and psychology, drawing from the work of respected figures like Dr. Robert Miller and Jack Brainard.
Turner stresses the importance of understanding horse psychology and herd behaviours, aiming to develop partnerships based on natural horse dynamics rather than human-centric domination.
Potential Impact on UK Western Riding
Turner's clinic offers food for thought. It introduces UK riders to a philosophy prioritising partnership over dominance. It might encourage more UK riders to explore evidence-based, psychology-focused training approaches.
